Hypnotherapy is a method for generating wellness (psychological, emotional, and physiological) when a person is in a natural state of relaxation which is known as ‘trance’.
Many people don’t know this fact – but everyone goes into trance many times each day! Trance is that state of mind that occurs when you become absorbed in a good book, movie or train of thought - where you just seem to ‘drift off’ and find your mind wandering into a pleasant daydream-like experience.
Hypnosis (another word for trance) occurs when your brainwave activity switches from beta (fully alert) to alpha (trance) and theta (deeper trance). In fact, just by closing your eyes your brainwaves will begin to slow into the relaxed state of alpha. (Is it surprising that most forms of meditation involve eye closure?) So it’s quite a natural thing for you to close your eyes from time to time and go into trance. You do it every day!
Trance then, is something you do often. Where the experience of trance becomes hypnotherapy is when a trained hypnotherapist is involved in the process who provides your inner self (your unconscious mind) with a range of special suggestions designed to help you in some specific way. Perhaps to become more positive, for instance. When these suggestions accord with your overall aims your unconscious mind can choose to respond to them, in appropriate ways, thereby helping you to achieve your overall ideal. Our practice is based on the south coast of England, in Bournemouth, Dorset.
